Joe Wicks reveals he’s ‘bonded again’ with his former addict father

Joe Wicks has revealed that he is ‘best friends’ with his former heroin addict father, Gary, and the pair have ‘bonded again’ after reconnecting.

The personal trainer, who recently announced that he’s expecting his third child with his wife Rosie, said his own father’s mistakes taught him to be a better dad.

Joe, 36, explained how Gary’s absence during his childhood inspired him to be ‘more stable’ and ‘supportive’ for his own children Indigo, three, and Marley, two.

Speaking to The Sun, he explained: ‘When your father is absent as a young kid, it makes you want to be stable.’

Joe continued as he added that his childhood experiences made him strive to be a ‘supportive’ parent as this is something he lacked as a child.

He said: ‘It’s made me be very committed to Rosie for one and to work through stuff – if we have an argument I don’t want to drag it out.’

The Body Coach suffered turmoil in his younger years, living through family addiction and mental health issues, admitting his past ‘buckled’ him.

Whilst Gary was a heroin addict who spent time away at rehab, his mother Raquela suffered obsessive compulsive disorder, bulimia and anorexia, while his grandfather was an alcoholic.

The lockdown PE teacher spent 15 days filming BBC show Joe Wicks: Mental Health, My Family and Me with filmmaker Louis, 51, which aired in July last year.

On filming the show, he told TalkRadio: ‘It’s a tough subject to talk about. I was interviewing my mum and she said, ‘When your little brother George was two, I went into rehab to deal with things.’

He added that he thought his dad may have been using drugs at the time, confessing: ‘That buckled me … chatting to my dad, he got emotional.

‘Realizing what I went through – I had actually blocked a lot of it out … I was really emotional in every scene.’
