Jay-Z will be target of picket line for hosting Oscars afterparty at controversial Chateau Marmont

A picket line is being planned outside of Jay-Z’s Oscars after party at the Chateau Marmont as the iconic hotel has been mired in controversy for years after firing over 200 staff allegedly without insurance or severance and a slew of racial discrimination and harassment allegations.

All the A-list guests who attend the 52-year-old mogul’s bash will have to cross a boundary established by workers and supporters of the strike as the boycott has been going on for two years.

DailyMail.com has reached out to Jay-Z’s representatives for comment and has yet to hear back.

The 99 Problems hitmaker – born Shawn Carter – will be joined at the gala by his wife Beyonce who is set to perform live during the Oscars telecast from the Compton tennis court.

The 40-year-old hitmaker will be performing her hit Be Alive from the King Richard soundtrack as the film documents Richard Williams’ relationship with his daughters Venus and Serena Williams who would go on to be come tennis megastars.

Back on March 19, 2020, the celeb favorite Chateau Marmont was marred in controversy as they fired nearly all its staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic as it was alleged that it happened without insurance or severance.

At the time, workers were told they were being terminated due to the economic impact of the virus shut down and there have been several demonstrations outside of the celeb haunt since.

Then recently banquet server Thommi Gross, who is Black and worked at the celeb hangout for more than three years, filed a lawsuit against the Chateau Marmont in January with allegations including racial discrimination, sexual harassment, and retaliation.

Former night auditor April Blackwell filed a second lawsuit against the hotel in April 2021 with allegations that she had experienced a racially hostile work environment and other unsafe working conditions.

Back in 2020, The Hollywood Reporter also published an investigation against the celeb hotel as employees had said that its culture of prejudice extended to its treatment of prominent Black and Latino visitors.

At the time a representative for Tiffany Haddish confirmed two incidents where she was stopped, questioned, and challenged on arrival.

Gross has claimed that she was passed over for promotions that were later given to white hires who were less qualified.

The union which supports the iconic hotel’s workers, Unite Here Local 11 Union, put out a press release on Wednesday about the rap mogul’s bash.

Co-president of the union Kurt Peterson blasted the star in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter as he said: ‘For Jay-Z to choose the Chateau Marmont for their Gold Party is shockingly insensitive.

‘They must move their event and choose an afterparty hot spot that treats its workers, especially Black women, with dignity and respect. Jay-Z has a responsibility to do better. ‘

Peterson went on to name several celebrities who have signed the boycott pledge previously put out by the union in hopes the A-lister will reconsider his venue.

He said: ‘We hope Jay-Z joins Gabrielle Union, Spike Lee, Issa Rae, Robin Thede, Quinta Brunson, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Roxane Gay, Ashley Nicole Black and Samira Wiley in boycotting Chateau Marmont.’

Now Unite Here Local 11 Union is hosting a protest at 8pm on Sunday outside the event on Hollywood’s biggest night with a giant balloon arch and names of prominent Black Hollywood creatives boycotting the Chateau Marmont in order to garner attention.

Jay-Z has previously held his ‘Gold Party’ after party in 2020 as A-list guests including Rihanna, Adele, and Kim Kardashian.
