The Top Whiskies According To The World Whisky Awards

The World Whiskey Awards were held at the Honorable Artillery Company in London on Thursday, 24 March 2022. Sponsored by Whiskey Magazine, an imprint of UK-based Paragraph Publishing, the World Whiskey Awards celebrate the top whiskies around the world as well as recognize the Icons of Whiskey global winners. The awards also saw the induction of four new members to Whiskey Magazine’s Hall of Fame.

This was the first time since 2020, that the awards ceremony had returned to London as an in-person event.

From bartenders to brand ambassadors, from retailers to visitor center managers, the Icons of Whiskey awards are designed to recognize and honor those individuals who have worked tirelessly to produce and promote whiskey and its industry around the world.

Among this year’s winners were Buffalo Trace Distillerywhich gained the title of Distiller of the Yearas well as Sullivans Cove Distillerywhich took home the title of Craft Distiller of the Yearand Kevin O’Gorman of Midleton Distillerywho was named Master Distiller / Master Blender of the Year.

The World Whiskeys Awards also recognized the winners of the World’s Best Whiskeys across a broad array of categories. The winners were selected by an expert judging panel drawn from whiskey exports all over the world.

This year’s winners includes The Lakes Distillery’s The Whiskeymaker’s Reserve No. 4which took home the World’s Best Single Maltand Redemption’s Barrel Proof High Rye Bourbon 10 Years Old as the World’s Best Bourbon.

Anita Ujszaszi, Awards Director, praised the judging of this year’s awards, noting that:

We must extend a heartfelt thanks to our judges, who all met online in dedicated tasting sessions to share their expertise and evaluate each sample individually. It’s been an incredible experience.

None of this would have been possible without all the great people involved, across all parts of the operation, who were willing to help and work together to make this a great year for the World Whiskies Awards. We have seen increased numbers of whiskies entered and measurably improved quality across the board. We’re looking forward to next year already.

The World Whiskeys Awards, part of the World Drinks Awards, is designed to commend the best whiskeys in 16 categories covering style and production methods. The first round of blind tastings is judged by independent spirits experts. From their scores, a winner is selected for each category and country, and gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded. Each country winner then competes in round two for the title of World’s Best in each category. The World Whiskeys Awards also commend outstanding product design.

Commenting on the winners of the related Icons of Whiskey awards, Christopher Coates, editor of Whiskey Magazinesaid:

The global whiskey industry has taken the challenges of the past few years in stride, and the strength of the entries we’ve received to our Icons awards for 2022 reflects this perfectly. As always, we have been inspired by each and every one of our Icons nominees. Regardless of where in the world they are located or the part of the industry they work in, it is apparent that all are united by an unrivaled passion for whiskey and a shared commitment to excellence in their respective fields.

The annual Icons of Whiskey awards aim to celebrate the achievements of outstanding people and places in the global whiskey industry, including distilleries and staff, retailers, bars and industry communicators.
